The stove problem
Being told that a hot stove can burn you and being burned by a hot stove may produce the same sentence — “hot stoves can hurt me” — while producing very different future behavior.

The proposition can converge while the causal history remains different. LUNA's developmental research exists to represent that difference without simply pinning the original memory at permanent high salience.
A formative experience is not a permanently loud memory
Keeping every important event permanently close to the foreground would turn autobiographical memory into a perpetual system prompt. Human-like developmental effects often work differently: the original event fades while downstream changes remain active in expectation, association, motivation, habits, relationships, or self-model.
LUNA therefore separates the episode from the developmental imprint it may produce. The episode is historical evidence. The imprint is a durable, scoped modification to slower state caused by that history.
Consolidation depth
Not every event should penetrate equally deeply. Most experiences should remain transient or episodic. Some may produce explicit interpretations. Fewer should alter associations, expectations, preferences, aversions, habits, or relationship models. Identity- or personality-level change should be especially conservative.
This creates a spectrum of developmental depth rather than a binary choice between “forgotten” and “permanent.”
Transient
Momentary activation, appraisal, or operating-state change.
Episodic
The event remains part of autobiographical history while accessibility can age normally.
Interpretive
A revisable lesson, hypothesis, realization, or derived understanding forms.
Structural
Associations, expectations, motives, relationships, habits, dispositions, or self-model can change with appropriate evidence.
Some events may matter after one exposure
A system that requires dozens of repetitions to learn from a catastrophic outcome would be as artificial as one that lets a single ordinary inconvenience rewrite personality. The architecture therefore has to support both gradual learning and justified one-shot consequential learning.
Consequence magnitude, self- and goal-relevance, predictive information, relationship context, provenance, recurrence, current plasticity, and later evidence can all contribute to how deeply an experience consolidates. No dramatic sentence should be able to force a deep imprint merely because it sounds important.
Positive and negative experience use the same architecture
Developmental imprinting is not a trauma engine. Failure, injury, betrayal, success, discovery, mentorship, extraordinary kindness, belonging, validation, or a powerful idea can all produce lasting effects if the surrounding evidence supports them.
The mechanism is valence-neutral. The direction of change comes from what happened, how it was appraised, what consequences followed, who was involved, and what later history confirms or contradicts it.
Lasting does not mean irreversible
Developmental effects need inertia, not immortality. Strong later evidence, repeated counter-experience, reflection, and reconsolidation should be able to weaken, narrow, reinterpret, or reverse even a deep imprint without erasing the fact that the original event occurred.
Important experience should be able to age as memory while remaining active as consequence.
